If you have an underbite or overbite, your orthodontist may suggest a Herbst appliance. The Herbst appliance is a stainless-steel, functional orthodontic appliance that helps guide your jaw into proper alignment.
What is the Herbst Appliance Used For?
Herbst appliances are used to correct overbites, underbites, or overjets, which are commonly referred to as “buck teeth.” The appliance works to align your jaw, allow your bite to fit together, and fix these jaw-related issues.
How Does the Herbst Appliance Work?
The purpose of a Herbst appliance is to align your top and bottom arches so that your teeth fit comfortably together when your mouth is closed. This appliance does that by attaching to your back molars and connecting the upper and lower jaw with a stainless-steel tube.
At each appointment, your Herbst appliance will be adjusted to gently apply force to align your jaw. Each adjustment will bring your jaw closer to its optimal position. While it may feel bulky at first, you’ll quickly get used to it and be excited for the results!
How Long is Treatment with a Herbst Appliance?
On average, patients wear a Herbst appliance for about 12 months, but treatment times can vary. Your orthodontist will discuss with you the best plan of action for your teeth. Although you may see an aligned bite before your appliance treatment time is up, it’s important to keep the Herbst appliance in place to solidify your results.
How to Clean a Herbst Appliance
It is important to keep your Herbst appliance clean throughout treatment to ensure you maintain a healthy smile. To clean your appliance, simply use a toothbrush and toothpaste and brush twice daily, as usual. We also recommend a fluoridated mouth rinse to help protect all surfaces and discourage food particles from getting stuck.
